Watching these trippy moments are not directing well, as the camera makes it all look disorientating and not good for the eyes. The moments where you see Devin experiencing the feeling of highness is most certainly meant to connect with the audience, as they are (apart from me) supposedly feeling all these sensations and seeing trippy stuff and then laugh at how cool they feel, because Devin is going through the same things as they are, but for the first time.

Them puffing their red eyes out or watching Weasel Banana going on a huge rant about how to get high. That’s a one to type without cringing! That was when I started to question what would be more painful to watch. The nadir of the film is when he inhales a girl’s farts and then smokes it out. I wanted to reach into the screen and throttle him as I wanted him to swiftly leave the scene every time he appeared. Talking of the wild crowd, I’m not joking or exaggerating when saying this as Mac’s friends are unlikeable, especially one who yells out unfunny and immature phrases that, high or not go against the target audience the film is aiming at. The supporting characters are either boring, forgettable stock characters found in other films of this setting. She is the only normal character and one that behaves like a human being because, I guess you’ve got to have one normal person amongst the wild crowd.

It’s obnoxious to see that now Devin has had a good old puff and is now mates with Mac he thinks he’s the bees knees and thinks its cool to treat his girlfriend like shit. It’s a generic character arc, but its all the film’s got. Were you really expecting anything less from Snoop Dogg? Same with Wiz Khalifa, except he goes through an arc of some sorts. Snoop just swaggered around the school like he owned the joint and the fact that he’s a junkie is his only defining character trait. Not one second could I believe that an, at the time, 35 year old man and a more believable ish mid 20s man are high school students. I’m sure if I took White Banana’s advice and I was as high as a kite, then yeah, I probably wouldn’t give a damn about the situations unfolding before my eyes, but because I’m not and coming from an outsider’s perspective, the film is just terrible.

Mac & Devin Go to High School is just a series of bad joke after bad joke under the illusion of a typical high school and the jokes all fall flat. It’s just Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa playing themselves, smoking weed while pretending to go through this generic high school route that have been played out in other, better films. I can’t even say that it’s paper thin, as it doesn’t seem like its there. Mac befriends Devin and ultimately turns him into a “hip” and “cool”… or rather “groovy” individual and he starts changing his appearance and other smokin’ shenanigans unfold.ĭespite there being an actual plot in a film named after a music album, the film decides to not let it play out and only be a bunch of words to read on IMDb, as there is no plot. Hale IN-HALE, GEDDIT?! where Devin is struggling to write his valedictorian speech, while Mac is now entering his 15th year of school.
The film follows two high school students, Mac Johnson and Devin Overstreet attending the high school under the name of N. His voice, his dialogue, just his existence in the film was hard to stomach for a minute, only to learn that he makes regular intervals to share his words of wisdom to the high viewers.

In advance, this meant that I couldn’t “enjoy” this movie or get any kind of pleasurable benefits out of it- oh shock horror (!) This is all (wisely) said by our mascot of the film, Slow Burn, a horrendously cheap and crafted Spliff who looks like he should join Seth Rogan’s Sausage Party crew, but instead got rejected because the animators of that film have the creativity to conjure up something worthy of a Joint and not something that resembles a fucking banana. Why is that you may (or may not) ask? Well, my fellow ones, to make this quick and easy as possible to explain… I do not fall under the category of those lanky young souls who like to get high smoking a fat ol’ doobie. Mac & Devin Go to High School is quite possibly the worst film that I have ever seen in the existence of any form of entertainment.
